We all remember what happened in 2020, that event triggered a shortage from disinfectants to hand sanitizer. Back then lots of DIY disinfectant recipes could be found online but those recipes were thrown together in a rush. Since I was very much into herbalism back in 2020, I had no fear of cleaning product shortages.

I want to start this article off with a list of essential oils that are perfect germ busters.

Antibacterial/ Antiviral Essential Oils

Bay Laurel, Bergamot, Cardamon, Cinnamon Leaf, Citronella, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemongrass, Lemon Geranium, Orange, Oregano, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rose, Sage, Sandalwood, Tea Tree, Thyme, and Vetiver

The following blends can be made by placing the essential oil drops in a glass dropper bottle and gently shake.

These blends can be used in diffusers, vapor steam, and room sprays. You can also place a single drop of oil blend on a Kleenex for inhalation treatments.

15 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil

21 drops Thyme Essential Oil

Clean Air Diffuser Blend (makes around 1.5 ounces)

45 drops Clove Essential Oil

And now a cleaning spray recipe.

20 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil

An Alternative to Bleach

I grew up using chlorine bleach to clean everything from walls to dishes and everything in between. This habit has stuck with me for almost 45 years, but we all know even when you intend to use gloves every time you use bleach, this isn’t always the case.

I will be honest; my hands are a little rough before I moisturize them and currently treating an eczema patch on my hand. So, let’s find an alternative to the moisture stripping chemicals chlorine offers.

Alternative Bleach Recipe (Makes ½ gallon)

¾ cup 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

¼ cup lemon juice

1 tbsp. citric acid

20 drops Lemon Essential Oil

Distilled water, to fill.

Mix peroxide, lemon juice, lemon essential oil, and citric acid in ½ gallon amber jug. Gently swirl, add distilled water to fill. Seal lid and gently shake to blend all the ingredients. Use this formula the same way you would use bleach. You can add it to your white clothes, use it for cleaning and as a rinse aid for your dishwasher.

Store in under your sink or in a pantry away from heat and light.
